Chances are you’ve got that one mate that won’t stop yarning about overnight oats anytime you start talking about brekky. Or you’ve seen overnight oats plastered all over your Tiktok or reels and how it’s the most incredible thing. Well, let us tell you that it’s for good reason! If you’ve never dabbled in this incredible breakfast option, this article is for you!

Why Overnight Oats?

  • Time-Saving: No morning prep! You'll wake up to a ready-to-eat breakfast.

  • Nutrient-Rich: Oats are packed with fiber, vitamins, and minerals, providing lasting energy throughout the day

  • Customizable: The possibilities are endless. You can adapt your overnight oats to suit your taste preferences.

  • Digestion-Friendly: Soaking oats makes them more easily digestible, and they are gentle on your stomach.

  • Healthy and Cheaper Alternative: I’m not gonna lie, those $6 muesli boxes at Countdown are delicious, but if you’ve ever delved into the nutritional information section of the box, you’ll see the boatloads of sugars that the manufacturers add in. That’s why they taste so good.

Ingredients

Chances are that you've got 90% of this list in your kitchen already!

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats (really any oats will do)

  • 1/2 cup milk (any type of milk works well)

  • 1/2 cup yogurt (Greek yogurt or your preferred type)

  • 1-2 tablespoons sweetener (honey, maple syrup, agave nectar etc.)

  • A pinch of salt (if you’re feeling fancy)

  • Mix-ins and toppings (fruit, nuts, seeds, spices)

How?

You’ll be an artisan Overnight Oats chef in literally no time following these guidelines.

  1. Choose Your Container: Honestly, just your stock standard bowl works great. If you eat at work or on the go, use a bowl with a lid.

  2. Combine the Base: In your bowl, add rolled oats, milk, yogurt, sweetener, and a pinch of salt. Give it a good stir to ensure everything is well mixed.

  3. Add Mix-Ins: Get creative with your mix-ins. You can include sliced bananas, fresh berries, chopped nuts, chia seeds, flaxseeds, a dash of cinnamon, or cocoa powder. If you’re like me, then just the oats themselves taste good enough, but adding mix-ins takes it to a whole ‘nother level.

  4. Seal and Refrigerate: Cover your container with a lid and place it in the fridge. Head to sleep.

  5. Eat: In the morning, give the oats a good stir to combine all the ingredients. Now eat, and enjoy for all the Overnight Oats glory.
